Educational psychologists work with children and adolescents, assisting in their psychological adjustment and development. They operate within the contexts of family, school, peer groups and communities, and are able to conduct and interpret scholastic and psychometric tests. They hold Master’s Degrees in Educational Psychology and are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
My name is Hanlie Snyman, I completed my undergraduate and honours studies at the North West University (BA Psych) and Stellenbosch University (Hons. Psych) in South Africa. After a gap year in The Netherlands I decided to stay in the country to do a Masters degree in Developmental Psychology at Leiden University. As a component of my study I completed my internship at the Cor Emous School in The Hague and also received a further registration in advanced psycho-diagnostics in children and adolescents from the Dutch Institute for Psychologists (NIP - Nederlands Instituut van Psychologen).
After returning to South Africa I worked full time for Good Hope Psychological Services based in Stellenbosch Hospital and TC Newman Hospital in the Boland area. Here I worked with a broad range of clientele and during this time also received further training in client-centered therapy, hypnotherapy and play therapy.
I offer therapeutic services to children, adolescents and adults within the context of learning and development. The aim of individual therapy is to guide and assist my clients so they can grow and develop optimally.
I provide assessments in the following areas: - School readiness - Learning and scholastic difficulties and failing grades - Attention, concentration and/or hyperactivity (AD/HD) - Emotional Assessments - Subject choices - Study choice - Career guidance
Once a year I do volunteer work for Operation Smile, an organisation which provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe. When I go on a mission with them, my role is to provide psycho-social care to patients and their families which can reduce the stress experienced by them, and enhance their abilities to cope effectively with potentially stressful situations. Knowledge and application of foundations in theories of child development, play, stress and coping, and family systems are the basis for this practice. I have done missions in Malawi, Congo, Mozambique and South Africa.
