Clinical psychologists treat people with relatively serious kinds of psychological distress, like depression or anxiety disorders. They hold Master’s Degrees in Clinical Psychology and are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
I am a Clinical Psychologist practising in the Newlands / Rondebosch area in Cape Town. I work in depth psychotherapy with Couples and Adult Individuals and believe in offering a confidential, safe, non-judgmental space in which we can explore your difficulties in a deeply respectful way.

My orientation is psychodynamic, informed by psychoanalytic theory, although I draw on a number of other modalities. The process begins with an assessment before we agree on a treatment plan together. This also allows you to get a feel for how I work before embarking on a psychotherapy process, which involves meeting at regular times one or more times a week. You can expect me to listen carefully to your thoughts, feelings, fears and expectations and your own reasons for coming to therapy.

Couples and individuals can struggle to know if they really need to see a psychotherapist or not and often wonder if their own problem is too big or too small for this. There is really no right or wrong reason to seek psychotherapy and people decide to come for very different reasons. Some have had a traumatic experience, some are struggling with relationships or work conflict, some come because they feel very bad about who they are without knowing why, others know “something is wrong” without really being able to figure out what it is, while some seek therapy because they are struggling to cope with major life events, like becoming a parent.
Psychotherapy can be beneficial for you individually or as a couple to understand and manage a whole host of difficulties. Seeing a psychotherapist for a few sessions will help you explore if you need psychotherapy or not.
I believe that psychotherapy can be a valuable collaborative process between a caring therapist and client/couple. Our current struggles are often shaped by past events and relationships - psychotherapy can help you explore deeper processes in your thoughts and feelings which you may not be consciously aware of but which affect you today. I believe the goal of psychotherapy is to have a deeper and fuller understanding of your individual or couple self in order to find healthier, more lasting ways of being in relationships and in the world, and in managing your difficulties.
