Clinical psychologists treat people with relatively serious kinds of psychological distress, like depression or anxiety disorders. They hold Master’s Degrees in Clinical Psychology and are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
Following my training and qualification in South Africa I worked in the United States in a residential treatment setting for children and managed a dual diagnosis service for adults. In the United Kingdom I worked in the National Health Service with both adolescents and adults with various mental health problems, managed a crisis house and taught on an art therapy course as senior lecturer. I also developed and ran self-development workshops and events for the public and health professionals.
I have worked with children, adolescents and adults in a wide range of settings providing individual, couple, family and group therapies. Presenting problems included depression, anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders, trauma, substance abuse, bipolar mood disorders, schizophrenia and personality disorders. I also work with difficulties relating to adaptation, lifestage transitions, stress, trauma, relationship problems, identity and self-image.
More recently I developed a unique residential programme for teenagers with challenging behaviour, which is the only one of its kind in South Africa, and was both approved by the Department of Social Development as well as defined as best practice.
